CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON BINGARA GORGE GOLF COURSE
Australian-based Marsh is one of the world’s most in-demand designers whose projects include the remodelling of the prestigious Beijing Country Club and the ultra-exclusive Sutton Bay in South Dakota. He has completed 50 courses across the globe with another 20 at various stages of development. His Australian courses include The Vines in Perth, which hosted the Johnny Walker Classic last year, and the highly rated Terrey Hills, five times home to the Canon Challenge and the Australian Women’s Open.
Bingara Gorge Project Director Paul Gerlach said Graham Marsh brought to the project an intimate knowledge of the Australian landscape and environment as well as a reputation for delivering first class golf courses.
“We consider ourselves very fortunate to have the input of two of the biggest names in golf course design,” said Mr Gerlach. “It’s a very exciting time at Bingara Gorge right now, having achieved this milestone, the first step towards delivering to our current and future residents the golf course which is at the heart of this community.
“There are real benefits in having a design team based in Australia and with Graham’s 30 years experience integrating golf courses into a residential environment, we’re looking very confidently into the future.
“We already have Graham’s team working on the detailed design documentation and construction will go forward using the latest GPS technologies, ensuring the built course is true to the design vision.”
Known as a hands-on designer, Marsh said he looked forward to bringing the Bingara Gorge vision to reality.
“The location for this course rivals many of the best in the world,” said Mr Marsh. “We’ve got a lot to work with here – a natural topography that is perfectly suited to golf and some truly memorable views taking in the ravines and gorges.”
The initial construction work will focus on stormwater and sediment control, services and the necessary earthworks for lakes and water storage basins which lay the foundation for the fairways.
Mr Gerlach said delivery of the golf course once complete, would have benefits beyond the boundaries of Bingara Gorge, a Delfin Lend Lease master-planned community that will be home to 3500 residents upon its completion.
“The direct beneficiaries are clearly the residents who will have this golf course as a backdrop to their daily life but also the people of Wollondilly and the greater south-west region,” said Mr Gerlach.
“Importantly the course has been designed and will be constructed in an environmentally sustainable manner with minimal impact upon the landscape, consistent with our commitment to being a Green Smart community.”
Mr Gerlach said with progress on the golf course and K-6 primary school, which will open in 2011 catering for up to 400 students, there was a real sense of momentum and activity at Bingara Gorge.
Delfin Lend Lease is Australia’s leading developer of master-planned communities with more than 25 projects across the country.
